Cadillac Adopts NASA Strategy to Construct Unit from Nothing for Melbourne Grand Prix.

A little more than a full year in the past at the Vegas Grand Prix, the Cadillac racing team were at last given the go-ahead as the world of Formula One's latest entry for 2026. Constructing the organization from the ground up has entailed a hectic operating tempo that the team boss, Graeme Lowdon, has compared to the Apollo program. As Formula One arrives on Las Vegas this weekend, Cadillac know the clock is ticking.

The Countdown to Melbourne

At the last event of the campaign to be held in the US, with around three months to go before they hit the circuit for the first time in Australia at the 2026 opener, the Cadillac F1 project have come on in leaps and bounds but, in what must seem like a sisyphean task, they are aware there will never be adequate time.

The chief technical officer, Nick Chester, came aboard the embryonic operation in early 2023 shortly after it was formed, when the squad were without even an confirmed place. He has been at its center since then and gets a knowing grin when considering the ride.

“There might be a brief moment looking back at what you’ve done and think: ‘Incredible, isn’t this fantastic what the team has created in under three years,’” he notes. “But then the next minute you consider: ‘Yeah, there is still a great deal to do.’”

An Unprecedented Opportunity

Chester enjoyed success at Renault in Fernando Alonso’s championship-winning campaigns of the mid-2000s and was in charge of engineering strategy at the then-new Mercedes electric racing team, but no other project has been quite like the challenge of launching the quintessentially American Cadillac name, a works entry supported by the corporate entity, General Motors, into Formula One.

“Creating an grand prix team from the ground up, how often do you get the opportunity to do that?” Chester remarks. “It is like nothing else. In an established team you rarely get the possibility to alter organizational mindset.”

With each passing day that goes by minds are sharper on the looming critical moment in Melbourne and targets are being set realistically.

“You have to assume that any incoming team entering the sport is probably going to finish last but merely participating will be an accomplishment in itself,” the team principal commented this year and while Chester echoed this he thought the organization had a reputation to build as well.
“The first thing we aim to demonstrate is that we deserve to be there,” he emphasizes. “So that we show up and we perform competently. We seek to prove that we are a serious contender doing the proper actions on the race track. When we’ve shown that we are a legitimate team, then we want to show forward movement after that.”

Driver Lineup and Team Building Push

In late summer they recruited Sergio Perez and Valtteri as their racers for 2026, a duo distinguished for their priceless expertise in operating at the sharp end in two championship-winning squads, Red Bull Racing and Mercedes, and Bottas expressed the sentiment of determined optimism.

“Naturally, we are pragmatic,” Bottas stated. “There’s going to be a massive task to do, and it’s going to be most likely a tough opening, because it's the top level of motorsport. But we’re not there to stay at the back. I believe given this organization, with this group, this staff, it's entirely possible we shouldn’t be able to get relatively quickly to the front and enjoy some success.”

To realize that ambition staff acquisition has been in full swing, with employees now up to in excess of 400 and planned to hit the target of six hundred swiftly. In addition to their existing facility at the UK base, the organization are in the phase of completing an main base at Fishers in Indy and there is the General Motors facility in Charlotte, North Carolina, where they are constructing the facility to produce the power unit, set for 2029 – in the meantime they will use Ferrari power units – and the Toyota's wind tunnel in Cologne. It is a complex structure, at odds with the trend in F1 for increased consolidation, and has prompted the fresh organizational mindset to which the CTO referred.

Apollo Inspiration

“It's closely based on the Apollo project,” remarked Graeme Lowdon ahead of the British Grand Prix in the summer. “We have a clear-eyed view, we know how challenging it is. The deadlines, are incredibly tight. Well, we’re not putting a man on the moon, but it can seem that way.”

So they have implemented, instead of the traditional management structure, a flat management structure akin to that of Nasa’s, where there were a variety of project teams all tackling distinct elements of the mission across a multiple sites.

“If you have to go through a protocol where someone has a problem and they escalate it to their supervisor, that leader talks to a manager somewhere else, it travels back down, it’s super slow,” says Nick Chester. “Therefore we enable people to take charge. Avoiding management approval for each action is much smoother and quicker.”

What Lies Ahead

The effectiveness of this nimble methodology will be evaluated in the heat of competition when the season begins and there is no little amount riding on this for the sport, too. Cadillac have signed as their development driver the 25-year-old American Colton Herta
