Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
